The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha Jayaram has urged Sri Lanka to treat the Tamil community living in the country on par with the Sinhalese community.
Jayalalitha, who leads southern Tamil Nadu's ruling ADMK, had raised the issue during her meeting with the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh yesterday.
“The Sri Lankan Tamils want more than anything else, and what we as Tamilians want more than anything else is that the Sri Lankan Tamils who are still living in the camps are allowed to return to their own places and allowed to resettle in the same places where they were living before and that they are allowed to lead lives of dignity, with equal rights on par with the Sinhalese citizens,” said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha.
Highlighting the discrepancies in the figures released by the Sri Lankan government and the private agencies during the final stages of the war, Jayalalitha told the media in New Delhi that she had asked the Indian Prime Minister to look into this matter and verify the truth.
“There are lots of discrepancies in the figures being put out by the Sri Lankan government and the private agencies as to the number of Sri Lankan Tamils killed in the camps. Private agencies put the numbers at a higher figures whereas the Sri Lankan government says there are only 10,000 people in the camps. So I have asked the Prime Minister to verify the truth,” noted the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha Jayaram.
Jayalalitha also highlighted the issues faced by the Indian fishermen who are accused of entering Sri Lankan waters.
“Our fishermen must be allowed to fish in waters around Kachchativu. Our fishermen do not have any other means of livelihood. They do not know any other trade and Kachchativu is only eleven kilometres away from the Tamil Nadu coast. There is no catch to be had on our side of the international boundary line, so they have to go to Kachchativu if they are to get a decent catch.” said the Jayalalitha Jayaram.
